The musk deer (Moschidae) of Asia and the crayons (Tragulidae) of the tropical forests of Africa and Asia are separate Families in the ruminant branch (Ruminantia). They are not particularly closely related to the deer in the Ruminantia clade.
Deer appear in art from the Paleolithic cave paintings on, and they appear in mythology, religion, and literature throughout human history, as well as in badges. Their economic importance includes their use of meat as a food source, their fur as a carpet, and their gauze as knife handles. Deer hunting has been a popular activity at least since the Middle Ages, and remains a resource for many families today.
