TV Tropes - a great rabbit hole for pop culture information and information - points out that Maiden / Mother / Crone's Freudian interpretation comes in various forms in film and television, though we can't. always recognize it. "The three aspects of a triune goddess or three goddesses that appear like sisters. They are maiden (usually blond and pretty, and either an innocent ditz or a budding glamor)," grandmother (often plump and rather eccentric, or pregnant, as the page image shows) and crones (often sharp-witted, sharp, bitter and unsentimental). For a Freudian trilogy, at times the daughter is Id, the crone is Superego, and the mother is the ego.
In some form of feminist spirituality, the Maiden / Mother / Crone is used as an example of a women's social treatment. While the Maiden is revered and Mother honored, Crone is pushed aside and disturbed. Many women are trying to go back and reclaim the Crone title, just as the gay community has reclaimed "idiots". Instead of allowing themselves to become "old women" in the Cronehood, these women are regaining the notion that with age comes wisdom. They are vibrant, sexual, very proud women labeled Crone. Instead of hiding in the dark, they celebrate their final years.
