Frogs appear in many legends, fairy tales, and popular culture. They tend to be depicted as kind, ugly, and clumsy animals, but have a talent for stealth. A few examples include Michigan J. Frog, "The Frog Prince", and Kermit the Frog. Toad again is primarily described as bad. In European tales, it is said to be a witch's assistant and has magical powers. Poisons from their skin are used to make poison, but are also used to create medicines to treat magical illnesses for humans and animals. The toad is also linked with the devil. In John Milton's Lost Paradise, Satan sends a toad to pour poison into Eve's ear.
The Moches in ancient Peru worship these animals, and often depict them in their art. In Panama, local legend holds that luck will come to anyone who discovers a Panama yellow frog. Some believe that when a Panamanian yellow frog dies, it turns into a talisman known as a huaca. Today, although most extinct in the wild, the Panama Golden Frog remains an important cultural symbol and can be found on the Molas decorative fabric made by the Kuna people. They also appear on flyovers in Panama City, on t-shirts or even lottery tickets.
