This was the last castle built and inhabited by Ludwig II. The first stone laying ceremony took place on September 5, 1869. When King Ludwig died near Berg Castle on June 13, 1886, Neuschwanstein Castle was still unfinished. After 17 years of construction up to that era, he stayed in the castle for only 172 days. Only a third of the rooms are planned to be completed so far. After Ludwig's death, the square tower and knight house were completed in a simpler way. Not built as a prayer house like Christian Jank outlined in the 1871 drawings.
Ludwig II never wanted to let ordinary people visit the castle, he would rather destroy the castle than let ordinary people lose its legend. But just six weeks after his death, the castle was open to visitors and today Neuschwanstein Castle has up to 5,000 daily visitors during the high season (June to August).
