One of the early Viking military expeditions, recorded in Anglo-Saxon history, was the invasion of Portland, near the Dorset county of England, in 787. June 793, Saxons recorded attack on a monastery on Lindisfarne Island (also known as Holy Island) in eastern England. Over the next 200 years, European history was filled with records of Viking pirates and their raids.
The Vikings conquered and established colonies in many lands. They once invaded the Anglo-Saxon kingdom and occupied much of western and northern England and all of Ireland, leaving influences on the coasts of Ireland and Scotland. They also invaded the kingdoms on the Iberian peninsula, France, the Baltic regions and Russia. At the same time, the Vikings discovered uninhabited islands in the North Sea such as Greenland, Iceland or the Faroe Islands.
