When naming the character, Kripke decided to take the names "Sam" and "Dean" to pay homage to Jack Kerouac in "On the Road". The name of the character "Sal" in the novel was not very emotional, so Kripke changed it to "Sam". According to the original version, Kripke plans to take the two characters' surnames "Harrison" to imply the same surname of actor Harrison Ford because Kripke wants Dean to have the "evil look to fear of Han Solo" character. However, since someone named Sam Harrison lived in Kansas, the name had to be changed so that there would be no legal problems. The charm of "The Winchester House Mystery" and his interest in creating a "modern Western" feel for the film, so Kripke combined to give the character's last name "Winchester". Trouble reappears when, according to the script, Sam and Dean's father is named "Jack", and someone named Jack Winchester lives in Kansas, forcing Kripke to rename the character "John", "John Winchester".
