The idea for The Nightmare Before Christmas originated from a poem by Tim Burton written in 1982, while he was an animator at Walt Disney Animation Studios. With the success of Vincent that same year, Walt Disney Studios began to consider developing The Nightmare Before Christmas into a short film or a 30-minute TV show. Over the years, Burton's thoughts gradually returned to this project, and in 1990, he decided to team up with Disney to develop the film. Film production began in July 1991 in San Francisco. Disney released the film under their Touchstone Pictures label because it thought it was "too dark and scary for children."
The Nightmare Before Christmas received critical acclaim from film critics as well as commercial success. It was later re-released by Walt Disney Pictures and re-released in annual Disney Digital 3-D format from 2006 to 2009, becoming the world's first stop-motion animated film to be converted. fully into 3-D format.
