Chilean flamingos live in large flocks in the wild and require dense populations of 15 to 18 individuals to promote reproduction. During mating season, males and females engage in a variety of behaviors that are intended to attract mates, such as shaking their head from side to side or repeatedly opening and closing their wings. Flamingos generally have a low reproductive success rate because they tend to delay mating until the environmental conditions are right.
After successful pairing, the male and the female will build a mud nest together as well as take turns incubating the eggs. After hatching, the young have gray fur and only start to turn pink at 2 to 3 years of age. Both parent and parent flamingos produce a nutrient similar to milk in the kite gland to feed their babies.
