Father McGivney founded the largest brotherhood Catholic organization in the world, the Knights of Columbus. Today the Society has grown with over 2 million members and contributes millions of dollars to charitable activities every year.


Father McGivney was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, in 1852, the first of 13 children of Irish immigrant couple Patrick and Mary McGivney. His father was a welder at a copper factory in Waterbury, where young McGivney worked for a short time as a child to help the family.


However, from an early age, he felt a call to be a priest (two of his brothers also became priests). He was ordained a priest on December 22, 1877, and pastor at Mary Parish in New Haven, the city's first parish.
